"Work-life balance is important. It’s something I struggle with every day, but it’s important to know that work will always be there in the morning. When you’re at work, work hard, work efficiently, work effectively, be productive. When you get home, leave work at work and enjoy your life."

Q&A with Clara:

Describe your current educational or professional pursuits.

I’m currently a full-time professional with an intense drive to go further. I work as an engineer at a software company working with data. I am constantly learning new things. I take small courses through work to increase my skills. I am looking into going back to school part time for my master’s degree as soon as I can decide on which degree I want; I have a wide array of interests these days.

How did your USD experience influence your career path?

The people I met greatly influenced me. I started at USD as a math minor, but the professors and students I met in those classes helped me understand my potential to strive for that major. Thanks to that effort, I received a job right before graduation in my field and was able to utilize my degree.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

One of my proudest achievements has just recently happened. I have worked so hard to get to where I am today, and I am so proud that my hard work paid off and I am now a senior engineer for Splunk.

What was your USD experience like? Were you involved in any campus organizations or activities?

I had such a great time at USD. I grew up in Beresford, so I was in Vermillion often for athletics and other things, like band contests, growing up. USD was such a great choice. I made the cheerleading squad and became active in cheering on our Yotes! I also started tutoring at the math emporium. I loved attending all sorts of sporting events and going to some of the fun activities on campus, like hypnotists or the Owl City concert.
