"Get involved, get involved, get involved. I can’t say it enough. These four years fly by, but the experiences and people you meet will stay with you forever. I made some great friends because I joined organizations, and holding a position helps prepares you with skills you may not learn in a classroom. Plus, it gives you something to talk about in job interviews."

Q&A with Jillian:

Describe your current educational or professional pursuits.

I am studying for the CPA exam and after I will sit for my Investment Advisor licenses. Outside of work, and just like my time at USD, I still push myself to stay active and involved in different organizations throughout Sioux Falls and South Dakota. I am the accountant for Alpha Phi Psi Chapter, currently sit on the finance board for the Sioux Falls Airshow, and stay active in Prairie Family Business Association, Sioux Falls' Chamber of Business, and Sanford’s Women’s Council. At Nelson & Nelson, we see people every day worrying about their financial situations. My goal is to help as many people as possible through these obstacles and help take away the stress of managing taxes, investments and their hard-earned money.

How did your USD experience influence your career path?

Originally, I was between a health and accounting major, because both could allow me to help people through different life obstacles. I became more drawn towards and excited for my business classes and realized that accounting was the path that was best for me. Through my time in campus organizations such as Coyoteopoly and helping with accounting for Aramark, I gained experience and knowledge to further what I learned in the classroom.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

I would say my proudest achievement is having completed The Evan C. Nolte Leadership Sioux Falls’ Program. Through the program we met with different leaders in Sioux Falls and learn from them on how to better serve others, how their leadership is helping Sioux Falls expand at an exponential rate, and what we can do to help in the future. There were 99 applications sent in and I was one of 30 chosen.

What was your USD experience like? Were you involved in any campus organizations or activities?

I loved my USD experience and how there were so many ways and areas to get involved in. I was a part of Big Pal Little Pal, CFO of Coyoteopoly, member of Alpha Phi where I also held the position of director of finance for one year, competed in Strollers, and worked for Aramark as an office and finance clerk.
