"Current USD students should take every chance they can get to be involved. I truly believe that it's what makes the experience at USD unbelievable. If it wasn't for USD, I wouldn't have met my best friends or my husband."

Q&A with Katie:

Describe your current educational or professional pursuits.

I am currently a teacher at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. I advise the newspaper, the Statesman, which has received state and national recognition. This last year I started my doctorate degree at USD in curriculum and instruction in the School of Education. My goal is to be a professor of education. It would be even more awesome if I became a professor at my alma mater!

How did your USD experience influence your career path?

USD allowed me to meet several people that I still work and connect with today. The university helped me prepare to be an effective teacher, along with retaining my interest in education. As I started my doctoral program, I was able to pick right back up with my previous professors and mentors that I met in undergraduate school, and many still remembered me. I believe working in admissions at USD also helped me with working with high school students in preparing them for college. Overall, my college experience was fantastic, and the experience helped me gain a love for learning.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

My proudest achievement is growing a successful program at Lincoln High School. My first year of being the newspaper adviser I had 17 students. I now have 40 students. They are all extremely passionate about journalism and writing. These students are moving into journalism careers, along with other successful careers. I love that I have the opportunity to make that impact. I think it is pretty cool to be in love with a career, eight years in. I know that I chose the right career.

What was your USD experience like? Were you involved in any campus organizations or activities?

USD had a significant influence on my current life. Due to the number of activities and organizations I was involved in, I was able to create networks of friends and colleagues. I was in Greek Life (Pi Beta Phi), Student Ambassadors (secretary-treasurer), Dakota Days Planning Committee, and Colleges Against Cancer. Now, as a doctoral student at USD, I am a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and I am looking to get more involved as I move through my program.
