"My advice would be to enjoy every moment. Even when you feel the most overwhelmed, take it all in and just breathe. You only get to experience this once. For recent grads, know that the education you received will take you far and make you prepared for your job ahead. It won't always be easy, but it will be worth it."

Q&A with Kim:

Describe your current educational or professional pursuits.

I currently teach preschool for 4- and 5-year olds in the Bishop O'Gorman Catholic School System at Christ the King Elementary School in Sioux Falls. This is my fifth-year teaching and third year in Sioux Falls. Prior to moving to Sioux Falls, I taught junior kindergarten at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Yankton. I am currently in my third year of coaching volleyball for O'Gorman. During my first year of coaching, I was the eighth grade A and B coach, and for the last two years, I have been the junior varsity coach for O’Gorman High School.

How did your USD experience influence your career path?

My professors at USD had the greatest influence in my career path. They instilled in me the hard work, dedication and love of teaching you need to be successful. Gera Jacobs really made me fall in love with early childhood education. She taught me that it may not always be easy, but you could be the first school experience for students, and you need to embrace them and teach them to love learning.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

One of my proudest achievements has been fulfilling my dream to play collegiate volleyball while pursuing my degree in education. I am extremely proud of being able to extend my knowledge not only in the classroom, but on the volleyball court.

What was your USD experience like? Were you involved in any campus organizations or activities?

I had a great experience at USD. I was a starter on the volleyball team from 2009-2013. Even though I was unable to participate in many other campus activities, I still feel my time at USD was very meaningful and had a profound impact on me. I made many friends and met several fellow students that are now my colleagues. While at USD, I also met my future husband. We have been married for two years and are expecting our first child in February 2020.
