Director of Development, Beacom School of Business

Job Description

The University of South Dakota Foundation plays an instrumental role in supporting the University of South Dakota. The Director of Development for the Beacom School of Business is responsible for leading our fundraising efforts and cultivating relationships with donors and supporters of the Beacom School of Business. This position reports to the Vice President of Development and is a key member of the Development team that collaborates on the strategic goals, objectives, and deliverables of the organization’s fundraising and engagement plan.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identity, cultivate, solicit, and steward major Secure philanthropic gifts in support of the University of South Dakota, with an emphasis on the Beacom School of Business.
  • Develop meaningful and productive relationships with a portfolio of major gift donors.
  • Be accountable for the input of pertinent prospect information and contact reports into the donor database.
  • Travel regionally and nationally to call on current and prospective contacts to solicit donations. Travel may involve overnight and weekend obligations.
  • Establish and meet mutually agreed upon annual goals for moving donors through the development cycle, including visits, proposals, and dollars raised.
  • Draft and customize correspondence, proposals, and other written materials for assigned prospects and donors.
  • Work closely with internal and external partners on the execution of an engagement strategy through the integration of annual giving, marketing, and stewardship.
  • Attend and participate in a wide sampling of university and campus events to gain a strong understanding of the University of South Dakota.
  • Represent the Foundation as an ex-officio member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Beacom School of Business.
  • Stay informed about trends, best practices, and emerging opportunities in philanthropy and higher education fundraising, continuously seeking ways to innovate and improve fundraising efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out effective prospect identification and assessment, engagement and cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Excellent written, and verbal communication skills, and active listening skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or another related field required.
  • 1 to 3 years of combined fundraising, business development, marketing, or communications experience is required. Experience in leadership, communication, and management is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.

Salary Range: Starting $75,000/year
