Vice President of Development

Job Description

The University of South Dakota Foundation plays an instrumental role in supporting the University of South Dakota. As a key member of our team, the Vice President of Development will play a critical role in advancing our mission by leading our fundraising efforts and cultivating relationships with donors and supporters.

The Vice President of Development is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure financial support for the University of South Dakota. Reporting to the President and CEO this position will lead a team of development professionals to achieve fundraising goals and advance the organization's mission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with the university’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with university leadership, including the President, Provost, Deans, and other key stakeholders, to identify fundraising priorities and opportunities for philanthropic investment.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the development team, setting ambitious but achievable fundraising goals and metrics to measure success.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, prospective donors, alumni, corporations, and foundations to secure major gifts, planned gifts, and direct fundraising methods.
  • Provide leadership setting the standard in all facets of the donor life cycle (identification, engagement, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship).
  • Oversee the creation of compelling fundraising proposals and collateral materials tailored to specific donor interests and fundraising priorities.
  • Provide leadership to the team of fundraising professionals; mentor and motivate a high-performing development team, providing professional development opportunities and fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and accountability.
  • Set clear performance expectations and regularly evaluate individual and team performance against established goals and objectives.
  • Strategically engage the President, Trustees, faculty, alumni, and other key stakeholders in fundraising activities, providing meaningful and valuable engagement opportunities and effective support
  • Deepen and broaden relationships with alumni and donors; further the loyalty and engagement of USD's diverse community to encourage higher levels of support and involvement
  • Utilize data analytics and fundraising metrics to track progress, evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising initiatives, and make data-driven decisions to optimize fundraising strategies and resource allocation.
  • Serve as an active and contributing member of the Executive Team and effectively collaborate with colleagues throughout the executive team and overall organization.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records, gift documentation, and fundraising reports using the university’s donor management system.
  • Extensive travel is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience leading and motivating high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated success in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, with experience closing six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Ability to lead a professional team through the planning process and execution of successful fundraising efforts and campaigns
  • Excellent written, and verbal communication skills, and active listening skills with strong attention to detail

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or another related field required.
  • 5 to 7 years of combined fundraising, business development, marketing, or communications experience is required. Experience in leadership, communication, and management is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.

Salary Range: $120K/yr - $140K/yr
