Where Twins Roots Meet Coyote Pride
Meet the 2026 First-Pitch Honoree
Tori Schlagel
For those who may not know you, can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey to the University of South Dakota?
I am entering my second year at USD as a sophomore majoring in business administration. After my basketball career, I hope to pursue a career in sales. I am originally from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, where I attended Eden Prairie High School and developed my love for basketball. Now, I am proud to be a member of the USD women’s basketball team. Growing up, I spent countless hours in the gym with my family, and now I do the same with my teammates at USD. Since arriving in Vermillion in June 2025, I have grown both as a player and as a person. I am proud to represent this program and university in front of my fellow Minnesotans.
Growing up in the Minneapolis area, what role did the Minnesota Twins play in your childhood?
Growing up, I loved going to sporting events, and one of my favorites was Minnesota Twins games. It was always warm and sunny, and nothing was better than a hot dog at the ballpark. I have been to quite a few games over the years, and they have always been so much fun to watch!
As a member of the USD women's basketball team, what does it mean to represent the university every time you step on the court?
As a member of the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team, I pride myself on my hard work and energy, which I believe I show on the court every day. I am incredibly proud to wear the University of South Dakota name and represent this program. I hope we are a team that our fans can always be proud to support.
Now you'll represent USD in a completely different setting - at Target Field in front of your hometown crowd. What was your reaction when you learned you'd be throwing out the first pitch at USD Night at the Twins?
When I found out I was going to be throwing the first pitch, I was incredibly excited. It is such a cool opportunity because it feels like a full representation of who I am. Throwing the first pitch allows me to represent both where I came from and where I am now. As someone from Minnesota who grew up going to Twins games, it is really meaningful to have the chance to represent USD in front of a fan base that has been a part of my life for so long. It is special to bring together two important parts of who I am—being a Minnesotan and being a Coyote. I am incredibly grateful to share this moment with the people who have supported me along the way, and that makes the experience even more meaningful.
Who are you most excited to share this experience with on USD Night at the Twins?
My family has been some of the most supportive people in my life and has played a huge role in helping me become the person and basketball player I am today. My parents have always encouraged me and pushed me to excel in every area of my life, both on and off the court. My brothers and I have also spent countless hours in the gym together, so I am especially excited to share this moment with them. Being able to experience this night with all four of them makes it even more meaningful.
If you could describe this opportunity in one word, what would it be and why?
Proud.
Because I am extremely proud to be chosen for this event, proud to be a Coyote and proud to be a Minnesotan. I am so happy to represent both parts of me in this special way.
Don't Strike Out!
