Dean Betsy Becker

What led you to this opportunity?

I began my career as a physical therapist specializing in cancer rehabilitation and later earned a Ph.D. in public health to better understand how individuals, communities, and professional networks connect and share resources. My career has evolved from patient care and interprofessional collaboration to research, higher education leadership, and community service. The opportunity to join USD was an ideal fit because of its strong commitment to education, service, and rural communities. Having experienced firsthand the importance of access to rural health care, I am passionate about helping students achieve their goals and prepare to serve the communities that need them most.

What excites you most about your school right now?

Without question, the people. As I listen and learn, I am continually inspired by the accomplishments, ideas, and genuine care that our faculty and staff bring to supporting students. Their passion and expertise make me excited about what is happening now and what we can build together in the future.

What do you hope every student experiences before they graduate?

I hope every student feels known and supported by faculty and staff who challenge them to reach their full potential. I hope students experience a rigorous, hands-on education that is closely connected to real-world practice. Most of all, I hope they graduate as confident professionals who value collaboration and service and believe they can make a meaningful difference for patients, families, and communities.

When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?

Outside of work, my husband and I enjoy traveling, especially when the destination includes an ocean. Hawaii is a favorite destination. I also enjoy volunteering with my miniature Goldendoodle, Ollie, as a certified therapy dog team. We recently helped welcome first-year Health Sciences students at a USD event, and I look forward to participating in more campus and community activities.
