Passing the Torch: Supporting Future Spanish Scholars
Rebecca Yanes shares how her journey, gratitude, and love for education inspired a planned gift that will uplift future Spanish students.
Can you tell me a little about your connection to USD?
After having lived in Mexico for sixteen years, I returned to the U.S., to Yankton, South Dakota as a single mother. I decided to return to school to get my bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and Spanish. Shortly after graduating from USD, I was hired as a Spanish teacher in Wagner, South Dakota.
How did your experience at USD shape your life or career?
I am appreciative of my experience at USD as a nontraditional student. I received the support needed to succeed. Several classes were offered online and through distance learning in the Summer. With my degree from USD, I was able to get a teaching job and support my small family. I enjoy teaching and serving others using my talent for speaking a second language. More recently I was able to work as a Spanish interpreter in medical facilities in Houston. Currently I love spending time with my grandson, putting my teaching skills to use. I also lead a Spanish ministry at church.
What was the inspiration behind your gift?
We received a request from USD for financial support for students and recalled the encouragement and support we received when pursuing our own education. My husband and I highly value academics and believe that a college education creates opportunities and growth
What do you hope your planned gift will accomplish for future generations of USD students?
We both came from financially challenged situations and hope that our funding will assist students in need that are pursuing a Spanish focused education. The fruits we have received through our education we would like to contribute to the educational pursuits of future generations.
What would you say to others who might be considering a planned gift to USD?
Act on the tugs of the heart when you feel called to give. It always warms our hearts to read the letters from the students who have received our assistance expressing gratitude. We remember our own struggles as we hope to support future students by making a small difference in their lives. We appreciate how USD has allowed us to direct our funds to support a specific group of students.
Do you have any advice for current students or recent alumni?
We are strong believers that the recipe for achieving goals is to study hard and work hard. After you have accomplished your objectives, show gratitude by giving back and helping others to be successful.
