Create Lasting Impact

The Next Step

Great institutions don't rest on tradition; they reinvest in it.

At the University of South Dakota and the USD Foundation & Alumni Association, progress isn't just something we measure—it's built through partnership. At every pivotal moment in USD's history, donor belief has shaped what comes next. Through the generosity of donors, alumni and friends, the university strengthens programs, expands opportunities and prepares for the future.

In a world of continuous change and innovation, reinvestment ensures that USD remains a place where students don't just learn, but lead. From modern learning spaces and world-class faculty to scholarships that transform lives, USD's next chapter is being written by those who believe in its mission.

Evolution by Design

When progress is guided by relationships and trust, innovation follows naturally. At USD, private philanthropy fuels that innovation, creating new ideas, programs and opportunities for students to thrive.

"Private philanthropy for students means internships, hands-on research in their fields of study and experiential opportunities like study-abroad programs," said Sue Tuve, a longtime supporter of USD and former director of planned giving at the USDFAA. "For faculty, it means attracting the best teachers and giving them the resources to pursue research and enhance their teaching. These opportunities simply wouldn't exist without the generosity of our donors."

This commitment extends beyond classrooms and labs. "The sculpture garden on campus brings together the artistic, environmental and cultural talents of our students a provides a quiet respite from their busy lives," Tuve added. "Private philanthropy only happens because seasoned, energetic professionals are out meeting alumni and friends, listening, sharing the vision and helping bring each gift to life."

This collective belief has pushed USD beyond expectations and continues to drive a vision focused on long-term impact.

"The Foundation is making meaningful strides, and the reinvestment fee will help ensure that progress continues well into the future," said Tom Gallagher, past investment chair for the UDSFAA. "This model brings USD in line with other institutions and strengthens our capacity to invest in long-term growth."

Every step forward builds on the last, propelling USD toward an even brighter future.

Shaping What Comes Next

Since its first class of students walked the halls of Old Main in 1883, USD has remained committed to a liberal arts education rooted in experiential learning and innovative research. Today, more than 10,000 students call USD home, exploring a 274-acre campus that serves as a hub for discovery, creativity and connection.

That tradition continues through reinvestment. Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the USD Foundation & Alumni Association will adopt an updated giving model that includes a reinvestment fee—an intentional and transparent step that strengthens the systems, services and long-term stewardship needed to honor each donor's impact.

By reinvesting a modest portion of every gift, the Foundation can uphold donor intent with excellence, maintain the infrastructure that carries their generosity forward and position USD for future growth. This reinvestment fee supports the essential work behind every gift: strategic planning, financial stewardship, fund management, donor services and the operational backbone that ensures impact continues.

"At the USD Foundation & Alumni Association, we're taking a deliberate step to strengthen the foundation behind the work you make possible," said Noah Shepard, president and CEO. "We're positioning ourselves for continued success through thoughtful reinvestment, ensuring that the opportunities and impact USD provides today continue well into the future."

This progress is intentional; guided by planning, partnership and purpose. It reflects a shared belief in USD's mission and a commitment to shaping what comes next.

By reinvesting in our mission today, we are safeguarding USD's strength for generations to come. Our progress reflects the people who believe in our purpose, and together, we are building the future.
