USD, Black Hills Playhouse Celebrate 80 Years of Theatre Partnership

Since 1946, the University of South Dakota and the Black Hills Playhouse have partnered to advance the theatre arts and provide professional opportunities for students across the state.

Founded by USD theatre professor Dr. Warren M. Lee, the Black Hills Playhouse was established to offer in-state opportunities for students after graduation. Eight decades later, that mission remains central to the collaboration.

Each summer, the Playhouse offers 76 positions in areas including acting, scenic design, customer service and costume construction. USD students and faculty can apply to join the company and, if selected, live and work in Custer State Park for 13 weeks. Participants are also eligible to earn academic internship credit.

"The Black Hills Playhouse is a true gem in the heart of the Hills," said Bonnie Bjork, a member of the USD Alumni Association Board of Directors.

The summer stock theatre provides hands-on experience in a professional environment and helps students build connections with industry professionals from across the country.

"The student who arrives at the Black Hills Playhouse is a different student after thirteen weeks," said Linda Anderson, director of the Playhouse.

USD plays a critical role in the Playhouse's success, contributing student, faculty and alumni talent to sustain high production standards and meet operational needs.

"The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the amazing work that our students and faculty do," said Bruce Kelley, dean of the College of Fine Arts. "They are extremely creative and work hard."

USD's role in the partnership will be showcased during USD Day at the Black Hills Playhouse on June 28. The featured production, 1776, will be directed by USD alumnus Dan Workman ‘05.

The event will celebrate the history and impact of the USD-Playhouse partnership and its ongoing contributions to South Dakota's cultural life.
