"My advice to current students is to show up and be present. You will create some lifelong memories if you do."

Q&A with Carrie:

Describe your current educational or professional pursuits.

I recently graduated from Vanderbilt University with my master’s in accountancy. In June, I was crowned Miss South Dakota and will spend the next year promoting financial literacy, the Miss SD Organization, and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. In the fall of 2019, I will begin my career in public accounting with KPMG.

How did your USD experience influence your career path?

USD opens doors for its students. During my time at USD, I was able to participate in several professional accounting organizations in the Beacom School of Business that helped me learn about different career paths. The career services department in Beacom helped me schedule interviews with different companies and listened to questions and concerns I had along the way. Thanks to the Beacom School of Business I earned an internship with KPMG in Omaha and Dublin, Ireland. The experiences I had at USD served as a launching pad for my career ambitions.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

I would say founding my 501(c)(3) financial literacy organization, Money $heep. I wanted to use my education in accounting and finance to serve the state of South Dakota and its students. It’s a non-profit organization that helps youth build a financial foundation. In the fall of 2017, I launched a three-month fundraising campaign and partnered with over 20 regional businesses to donate 10,000 financial literacy books to youth around South Dakota. By Executive Proclamation from Governor Daugaard, April 30, 2018 was designed as Money $heep Monday to celebrate financial literacy month and provide youth with an educational resource. I am excited to continue to use my education from USD and Vanderbilt to promote financial education across South Dakota through Money $heep.

What was your USD experience like? Were you involved in any campus organizations or activities?

As a student at USD, I was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta, president of Beta Alpha Psi, captain of the USD Cheerleading Team, sponsorship chair for Dakotathon, named 2017 Beacom Oustanding Senior, a participant in the UDiscover Summer Research program where I mathematically modeled basket tosses in cheerleading, and studied in the Honors department. I was and still am a Coyote athletic enthusiast and looked forward to game days with much anticipation. While all the organizations and activities I participated in made my time at USD memorable, it was the people I met along the way that left the biggest impression on my life. My first week at USD, I remember walking across campus and feeling lost because I didn't know anyone yet. However, as I left campus my last week at USD, there was someone to share a "hello" with every other step. I remember the people and their commitment to connection the most from my time at USD, which is something I will cherish forever.
