The University of South Dakota has received two original Oscar Howe paintings, generously donated by Sandra Percy through a gift-in-kind contribution. The works, titled Untitled Male Dancer and dated circa 1946, will be featured in the next Oscar Howe Exhibition at USD's University Art Galleries, opening May 1, 2025.

"It is always wonderful to welcome (Oscar) Howe paintings back to the University of South Dakota," said Bruce Kelley, dean of the College of Fine Arts. "We are so grateful to donors like Sandra, who support USD's mission to preserve, protect and promote these incredible works of art. Her generosity ensures that students, researchers and visitors from around the world will continue to have access to the genius and beauty that defines Oscar Howe's artistic legacy."

“I want them to go back home.” – Oran Percy

Percy inherited the paintings through family members who had purchased them directly from Howe. Her father-in-law had the rare opportunity to meet the celebrated Yanktonai Dakota artist and became an early admirer of his work.

"These pieces are exemplary of Howe's early style, influenced by the Dorothy Dunn Studio Style of the Santa Fe Indian School," said Amy Fill, gallery director for the College of Fine Arts.

The paintings remained in the Percy family for decades before being gifted to USD. Sandra and her late husband, Oran Percy, often discussed where the pieces should ultimately reside. Honoring Oran's wish, Sandra chose to donate the works to an institution that would care for and share them with the public.

"People who have art they love should find a place where others can enjoy it, too," said Percy.

The gift serves as a reminder of the many ways donors can support the arts at USD - not only through financial contributions but also through gifts-in-kind, such as artwork, instruments or archival materials. These donations help the university preserve cultural heritage and inspire future generations.
